Extension to Existing House

Russell Place, Williamstown, Victoria

Before
After

This proposal is to add additional living and working spaces for a growing family in an urban fringe Melbourne suburb, which include the re-activation of hard and soft landscape components of the site. The existing house was in need of an increase in overall floor area, whilst improving the amenity and connection to the existing, and largely unused backyard and shed at the back of the house.

The east-west orientation of the site allowed for opportunities to open up the existing living area for improved natural daylighting. Connections between the existing kitchen and the garden were through a proposed outdoor kitchen and covered decking area, that leads to the open space at the back. The shape of the new extension roof is inspired by the sails of yachts from the nearby yacht club, creating a cathedral shaped ceiling that brings plenty of natural light into the kitchen and living areas.
